Exploring the 8th Annual Indigenous Culture Festival with VYAS

Updated: Oct 24, 2023

On August 19, 2023, the 8th Annual Indigenous Culture Festival was successfully held in Barkerville, a town located in the Fraser Valley region of British Columbia, Canada. Volunteers from the Vancouver Youth Advocacy Society (VYAS), including President Gary Wang, Vice President Alyssa Yu, and Director Cici Zhao, joined with volunteers from the Fraser Volunteer Association of Canada and other individuals from Vancouver to explore the local Indigenous culture.

Barkerville, once a site of the Canadian Gold Rush, is known for its significant presence in Chinese immigration history. Over the years, it has transformed into a vibrant hub where Chinese heritage, European history, and Indigenous culture intertwine to create a diverse tapestry of stories, highlighting the town's profound historical and cultural value.

The 8th Barkerville Indigenous Culture Festival brought together Indigenous dancers, oral history tellers, cultural performers, elders, and other respected guests from local communities and various regions of British Columbia. The event provided a valuable opportunity for visitors of all ages and cultural backgrounds to gain deeper insights into Indigenous history, including the period before European colonization and the Gold Rush era.

In addition to participating in the cultural festival, VYAS volunteers also toured local communities and museums. They had the privilege of engaging in meaningful discussions with Mr. Ed Coleman, the Mayor of Barkerville. This immersive experience allowed VYAS volunteers to gain a deeper understanding of Indigenous cultural traditions and history, prompting them to reflect on historical events and the importance of preserving diverse cultures.

The VYAS Association has been actively participating in and organizing numerous volunteer activities over the past year. In these events, we have been providing diverse opportunities, encouraging our members to dedicate their time and professional expertise to various fields of volunteer work. Through these endeavours, we have established a dynamic and passionate volunteer network. VYAS team members aspire to see more volunteers join us in promoting cultural exchange between different communities, contributing to community integration and development in the future!
